Just like the writing style in All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, I will keep this review plain and simple: I did not enjoy reading this book. Even though I understand the purpose of its aesthetic, the writing style did not appeal to me; throughout the book there are short, simple sentences and a lack of interesting plot. This book's style is very similar to Ernest Hemingway's style of writing (the book particularly reminded me of The Sun Also Rises). If you enjoy reading about war and enjoy Hemingway's style of writing, then I would recommend this book. I just could not get into it because although I have liked a few of the war books that I have read, I generally do not enjoy reading books in that genre, and I am not a fan of the simplistic sentence style of writing.

There was one aspect of the novel that I did appreciate, however. I appreciated and agreed with the messages that this book was trying to convey:

1. War is violent, repetitive, cruel, monotonous, horrific, etc.

2. Soldiers rely on one another to survive (socially, on the front lines, etc.)

3. Soldiers go through similar experiences, and although we are reading about a German soldier in WWI, this experience is relatable for many, if not all, soldiers
